The Unfinished Symphony

“America, you great unfinished symphony, you sent for me

You let me make a difference, a place where even orphan immigrants

Can leave their fingerprints and rise up!”

—From “The world was wide enough” from Hamilton: The Musical

In 2022, I bought a laptop. Along with this laptop, I bought FL Studio, a music production application commonly referred to as a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). I wanted to make music for fun, but my main goal was to create lullabies for myself, to help me fall asleep. I ended up spending hours and hours making music instead of sleeping, finding myself once again shunning rest for the act of creation. As a child I imagined myself becoming an author, a chef, an artist, and even a professional martial artist, but never a musician. My father is the oldest of nine and every single Aunt and Uncle on his side of the family is a singer (perhaps ironic with the last name “Hammond”). A few are musicians as well, but singing was their main thing. My Nana, who is my father’s grandmother, was a semi-popular singer on the radio as well and released an album once. I have never been a singer and I disliked singing in public, so I never imagined music would grab me. Yet, making music felt natural and exciting to me, similar to writing. I suppose it is in my blood. I was still anxious and in pain, but I finally was able to do something.
