The colonization and co-opting of language is something that has been happening for a long time, yet the rise of tiktok’s popularity has created an issue that is very personal to me: the colonization and co-opting of AAVE (African American Vernacular English). These two words may seem extreme, but I use them intentionally.
Co-opt: take over, appropriate.
Colonization: the act or practice of appropriating something that one does not own or have a right to.

I feel that this is an accurate representation of what has occurred. I have no solid evidence yet except for my own experience. While I intend to share my own experience, I hope to do some research into this topic to find supporting evidence for my claims.
